Balls are one of those traditions that the Viennese really cling on to. Though copied all over the world, nothing will ever compare to the Ball experience in the capital of Waltz. The Waltz could almost be described as a synonym for Vienna, for its charme and the lighthearted spirit of its people. The New Year traditionally starts with a Waltz – played in every pub, bar, event location and even outdoors all over the city. Everyone, including tourists, merrily step into the New Year and onto the toes of their dancing partners to the sound of the “Blue Danube”.
For those willing to expose their toes even more to the dangers of high stiletto heels, Vienna holds the ultimate challenge. The “Opernball” is where high-society, aristocrats, political leaders and the Rich and Famous rub shoulders with those few normal citizens willing to spend one year worth of savings in one night.
Wanna meet a real princess or prince? Keep the 7th of February 2013 free. Tickets start from EUR 340,- which excludes everything but the pure admission fee. Be prepared to spend about EUR 1,000 for a table seating 6 and make sure not to invite any hard-drinking guys along, for one (small) glass of beer costs at least EUR 8. The dress code is evening dress: white tie and tails for the gentleman; floor-length ballgowns for the ladies.
